A twist on a classic tale at open air theatre in abbey ruins

By Caroline King - August 11, 2022Posted in : Nature and Outdoors, Theatre

This weekend, watch a classic tale with a modern twist at the ruins of Lesnes Abbey in South London. Ally in Wonderland is a new adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s famous story by writer Frank Saunders. And it’s The Ruined Theatre who are bringing it to life. They’re the team behind 2021 successes Our Teacher’s a Troll and WITCHES. So, it should be a great watch.

Ally in Wonderland at Lesnes Abbey

So, what’s this version of Alice in Wonderland all about? It’s a new take on the beloved tale of one child’s adventure in Wonderland. At its heart it’s still about learning important life lessons while meeting fascinating characters along the way.

Ally in Wonderland, a twist on a classic tale

While trying to avoid starting secondary school after the summer holidays, Ally falls down a rabbit hole and finds themself in the strange and fantastical world of Wonderland. While in Wonderland, the rebellious Ally meets some of the strange land’s most infamous characters including The Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts and the White Rabbit.

But will Ally learn that time isn’t meant to stand still? In order to overcome the greatest challenge of all, Ally needs to discover the secret weapon before they’re stuck for good in Wonderland with no way back home.

This production is set in the ruins of Lesnes Abbey, in the stunning outdoor parkland of Lesnes Abbey Woods. Here families are spirited to Wonderland with Ally. This adaptation is suitable for all ages and discounted tickets are available for local residents. And as it’s near to Abbey Wood station, which is now on the Elizabeth line, it’s pretty easy to get to.
