The North Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby is steeped in history and culture. And its atmospheric Abbey ruins with connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, make it the perfect location to hold a goth festival.
In fact, Whitby holds a few alternative and gothic-inspired events throughout the year, including Steampunk events and a Krampus run. But perhaps the most well-known is Whitby Goth Weekend. It takes place twice a year, in spring and autumn with a range of events from live music to alternative markets.
The 2022 spring event is about to get under way, with plenty of free and ticketed entertainment to enjoy. There’s evening events at Abbey Wharf including a rock and metal charity fundraiser and an epic rock-off between two DJs. And suitably gothic live music presented by Marquis Masquerade will take place at The Met Lounge & Ballroom.
The event’s Bizarre Bazaar will also return to the town, with an array of stalls selling all kinds of alternative clothing, accessories, gifts and artwork. Plus, The Royal Hotel will host the Royal Emporium, which is set to be full of steampunk and goth traders. And they’ll be providing refreshments too. Of course, you may prefer to scoff a tasty portion of fish and chips, which is another thing the town is famous for.
If you’re in the festival spirit, you’ll find more alternative and unusual suggestions over here!
