A Rich Mix of weird tales, epic stories and a lying contest

By Caroline King - February 16, 2022Posted in : FEATURED-STORIES, Literature, Theatre

Fancy brightening up the winter and spring evenings with something a bit different? Well, thanks to The Crick Crack Club you can. Hear tales of giant cow-eating cats and absurd lies told by plucky contestants hoping to win a lying contest crown, as a new season of events gets under way.

The Crick Crack Club is one of the UK’s boldest performance storytelling producers and programmers. They create exuberant, intelligent, wild, weird and wonderful events that draw you into stories based on folktales, fairy tales and myths from around the world.

Storytelling events from The Crick Crack Club

From Thursday 17th February they’ll be turning up monthly at Rich Mix in London’s Shoreditch, to bring you a blend of stand-up tale-telling and epic theatre with riotous themes and little-known stories. The events kick-off with a double bill of The Thief’s Tale and Future Imperfect – The Curse of Kassandra.

Then, at the beginning of April, you can enjoy The Grand Annual Lying Contest where contestants compete for the Hodja Cup. Judge them on their spurious poppycock! Following on from this frivolous fun, there’ll be a double bill celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass. It features performance storytelling and a film that looks at what happens when people are barred from their sacred land.

Following on from these wonderful events, there’ll be another double bill in May looking at what happens when people go astray. Expect shifting identities, liars, turncoats, rascals and the occasional duel. In June, storyteller Clare Murphy will be mashing up Greek myth, Egyptian epic, folklore, neuroscience and technology to explore the place where our mind slips.

As well as this upcoming season of shows at Rich Mix, there’ll be London shows at The British Museum. And outside of the capital, there are storytelling seasons at The Story Museum in Oxford and at Cranborne Earthouse in Dorset.

When: From 17th February 2022
Where: Rich Mix, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, London E1 6LA
£: Tickets cost £12.50 per storytelling show and £10 for the lying contest
