Sunnymead Court returns to the stage

By Caroline King - June 28, 2021Posted in : Theatre

Following its critically acclaimed, sell-out run at the Tristan Bates Theatre last year, the four-time Offie-nominated Sunnymead Court is returning to the stage this summer. This uplifting play will be heading out on a UK tour, calling at London, Lancaster, Mold and Bath.

Sunnymead Court’s return will start at London’s Arcola Theatre, as part of their outdoor festival Today I’m Wiser. It will then travel to the north west at the Dukes in Lancaster, before calling at north Wales’ Theatr Clwyd. The final stop will be at the Ustinov Studio in the city of Bath.

The returning production of Sunnymead Court will be brought to life by writer Gemma Lawrence (As You Like It, Luther) and Sasha Frost (His Dark Materials, Our Country’s Good). It’s presented by inspiring theatre company Defibrillator, in association with The Actors Centre.

An uplifting and heart-warming tale

So, what’s the play about? Well, it’s described as a celebration of the small, seemingly insignificant moments of human connection that might, in another time, passed us by. A theme that gels with how many of us have felt during and coming out of lockdown. It’s an uplifting queer romance that’s full of hope, humour and banging tunes.

From her balcony, Marie blasts out the same tune, every day at 11am. On hers, Stella tends to red geraniums bursting with colour and life. Two tower blocks facing each other. Two women who are looking for something more. After a chance encounter in a hailstorm, they start to embark on a new relationship conducted from the safety of their balconies. But when a flurry of miscommunication jeopardises their relationship, will they have the courage to make it work in a world that is changing faster than ever?

This production, which is focused on isolation and connection, questions whether reality can match up to the ideals we create. A love letter to London and its communities, it celebrates the small, seemingly insignificant moments of connection. And combines humour and warmth with an acute observation of the human psyche.
