An illuminated celebration of international comics

By Caroline King - September 29, 2020Posted in : Art, Exhibition, Festival

This week, watch a celebration of comics in Kendal as the Lakes International Comic Art Festival (LICAF) presents Illuminos.

This free, outdoor event, will be bringing some of the world’s greatest comic artists together in an animated lighting spectacle. Illuminos will be projected onto the front of Kendal Town Hall during the evenings of Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd October.

Illuminos, a celebration of comics in Kendal

This year’s festival is mostly online, with the virtual LICAF LIVE programme of events. The events include talks, comic challenges, live drawing, virtual exhibitions and interactive comic capers.

However, the festival still wanted to bring a bit of magic to the streets of Kendal. And so, the light spectacle has been organised to mark the occasion.

The event will celebrate the unique contribution of LICAF, and Kendal itself, to the world of comic art. The projection will include newly commissioned material from comic creatives including Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) Michael Lark (Lazurus, Batman, Captain America), Bill Morrison (The Simpsons), and Lucy Sullivan (Barking).

LICAF has working with one of the leaders in the field of digital mapping and performance projection for this special event. The Ramsbottom-based company, also called Illuminos, have previously worked on projects including the Capital of Culture closing ceremony, a lighting transformation of the Wales Millennium Centre and the Manchester International Festival.
