Wakefield’s annual culinary festival of all things rhubarb takes place next week, featuring a rhubarb installation, a cycle-powered carousel, a rhubarb recipe exchange and live music in the Rhu-Bar.
The Rhubarb Festival is an annual celebration of rhubarb, right in the heart of Yorkshire’s ‘Rhubarb Triangle’ and features cookery demos, children’s activities, live music, food markets, exhibitions, and arts and crafts: all with a rhubarb theme, of course.
Coinciding with half term, this year’s Rhubarb Festival will kick off on Monday 17th February, giving visitors the opportunity to taste and explore a host of events and activities relating to this curious vegetable (that’s right, it’s not a fruit).
Daily events will include a Rhubarb Triangle photo exhibition by Martin Parr, a Force of Nature Rhubarb Recipe Exchange and Rhubarb Reading Corner in the former Market Hall. Meanwhile, the Rhubarb Activity Zone will have Badge Making, the Fast Food Computer Game, a lantern workshop, and storytelling. There will also be a ride on tractor and the cycle-powered Bewonderment Machine in the Rhu-Barn food hall.
The Rhubarb Shed, based in the former Market Hall will contain artist Tony Wade’s imitation forced rhubarb shed, giving visitors the sense of real rhubarb growing by candlelight.
Over the week there will be a Rhu-Bar, set in a yurt, selling rhubarb-themed cocktails and hosting live folk and acoustic music, and comedy acts. In addition, Under the Canopy entertainment will include acoustic, folk and brass bands, as well as Morris dancing.
This year’s cookery demonstrations will come from Emma Kay, Farmer Copley’s, Jean-Christophe Novelli, Stephanie Moon, and Karen Wright; and the Food and Drink Market will this year be joined by a Street Food and Vegan Market, and an Arts and Crafts Market.
