Every year, on Boxing Day, the village of Grantchester in Cambridgeshire comes alive with the eccentric sport of Barrel Rolling.
The Boxing Day tradition originally began in the 1960s, but has only recently been revived. The event sees local teams rolling large wooden barrels in a relay race up and down Coton Road. The teams compete, usually four at a time, to roll the empty barrels as rapidly as possible (without injuring the crowds of spectators).
Everyone is welcome along to cheer on the teams and enjoy the hour of eccentric, charity fund-raising mayhem. After the barrel rolling, the participants usually head to one of the local pubs for some much-needed refreshment.
