Watch a thoroughly old-school surfing event in Cornwall this weekend as the World Belly Board Championships 2019 take place on Perranporth Beach.
This popular traditional surf event sees 200 people compete in a series of races, using wooden boards which hark from a by-gone era.
Originally set up in 2003 as a memorial event for the late Arthur Traveller, The WBBC has always been about tradition; a nostalgic event, celebrating surf heritage.
The aim of the event is to gather together the lovers of traditional belly boarding and surf, in order to raise donations and awareness for the RNLI, the organisation that saves lives at sea.
This year’s championship will begin at 10.40am with an Opening Ceremony, before the first of the heats start at 11am. The competition will be run in ten-minute heats with ten traditionally-dressed participants in each heat.
In addition, the Belly boards of the surfers will also be judged in an artwork competition. The lucky winners of the WBBC 2019 will be rewarded at the prize giving ceremony, with extra accolades given for Best Dressed, Best Artwork and the Cake Competition.
Cake competition you say? Yep, in addition to the old-school surfing contest, a belly board themed cake competition will also take place. People of any age can make and bake a potential winning cake.
This year there will also be a raffle with the chance to win a bespoke WBBC 2019 belly board, created by BUTCH Boards.
