A food fight with a difference in Lancashire

By Caroline King - August 18, 2019Posted in : Alternative Sport, Food & Drink

This bank holiday Monday, a village in Lancashire will be hosting a sporting contest with a difference.

World Gravy Wrestling Championships
Competitors at the World Gravy Wrestling Championships

The annual World Gravy Wrestling Championships will take place on Monday 26th August at the Rose n Bowl pub in Stacksteads.

The championships will see contestants wrestle for two minutes in a pool full of Lancashire gravy. The competition is judged on various different moves, as well as the amount of applause from the spectators.

Each year the brave contestants battle it out to win the ‘Gravy Wrestling World Championship Trophy’, which they get to keep for one year. Competitors must wear fancy dress, and a prize is awarded for the best outfit. On the day there will be 16 male and eight female participants competing in same-sex bouts.

As well as the wrestling, there will be plenty of family friendly entertainment, and food and drink will be available all day.

Those taking part raise money for their chosen charity and the event itself aims to raise much-needed funds for East Lancashire Hospice. So why not head along to the World Gravy Wrestling Championships for some slippery and saucy entertainment?

When: 26th August 2019, 1pm
Where: Rose n Bowl, 264 Newchurch Rd, Stacksteads, Rossendale, Lancashire OL13 0UG
£: Admission costs £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children
