Fun fruit races in Devon

By Caroline King - August 15, 2019Posted in : Alternative Sport, FEATURED-STORIES

Every year the Totnes Elizabethan Society organise a series of unusual races through the streets of the Devon market town.

Totnes Orange Races 2014 - Contrary Life

This year’s Totnes Orange Races will take place on Tuesday 20th August, along the High Street.

The Totnes Orange Race is said to originate from when Sir Francis Drake visited the town in the 1580s. The renowned captain and explorer was said to have bumped into a delivery boy, spilling oranges which quickly rolled away down the street. Every summer, the town commemorates this event with a quirky race where oranges are thrown down the High Street and Fore Street, with competitors chasing after the surprisingly speedy fruit.

The event is free to enter, with races for both adults and children, and prizes for the winners. Be warned though, the oranges can roll pretty fast down the street! Watch the video below to see how previous competitors have fared in the races.

When: 20th August 2019, from 11am – 12pm
Where: Totnes High Street, Totnes, Devon
£: Free
