Dandy chaps compete in fancy games at vintage fair

By Caroline King - August 6, 2019Posted in : Alternative Sport, Cabaret, Classes & Workshops, Dance, Fair, Festival, Food & Drink, Music

The Chap Olympiad is one of Britain’s most eccentric sporting events, where smartly dressed ladies and gentlemen compete in games such as Umbrella Jousting and the Cucumber Sandwich Discus.

A ‘chap’ at the Olympiad

This year’s Olympiad will take place at Firle Vintage Fair near Lewes, on Saturday 10th August.

The Chap Olympiad is a ‘celebration of sporting ineptitude and immaculate trouser creases’. The games reward panache rather than sporting prowess, and require the minimum of physical exertion. Events are designed to separate the chaps from the cads.

Expect eccentric and silly games such as the Tea Pursuit, Riding Crop Rumpus and Umbrella Jousting. The dress code for the event, as one might expect, is elegant finery, period military wear, formal wear and dandy wear. No casual clothing or sportswear will be allowed, except for cricketing whites of course.

The Chap Olympiad is organised every summer by The Chap magazine, a magazine for the modern English gent.

Other attractions at this year’s Firle Vintage Fair will include Victorian fairground rides, a vintage fair, dance performances and live music.

When: 10th August 2019, 1pm
Where: On the croquet lawn at Firle Vintage Fair, Firle Park, near Lewes BN8 6LP
£: Admission to fair costs £7 – £25
