British Firework Championships go off with a bang

By Caroline King - August 8, 2019Posted in : Exhibition, FEATURED-STORIES

See some of the country’s best pyrotechnic skills on display in Devon this month as the British Firework Championships 2019 take place in Plymouth.

British Firework Championships - Plymouth - Contrary Life

The championships, which have been taking place annually since 1997, began as a way of allowing professionals to display their pyrotechnic skills.

Each year six professional display companies are selected, by draw, to take part in the championships. Three teams will take part each evening, with the firework displays starting at around 9.30pm, depending on how dark it is. Each of the three displays will last around ten minutes, with a ten minute gap between each display.

Wednesday will see Nemisis Pyrotechnics, Aurora Fireworks and Phoenix Fireworks displaying their skills, and Thursday will see Illusion Fireworks, Selstar Fireworks and 1st Galaxy Fireworks taking part.

The displays are fired from the Mount Batten breakwater and can be seen from the Citadel and the Hoe. Visitors usually gather on the Hoe and along Madeira Road from early evening to enjoy views over Plymouth Sound. So those wishing to get a good spot for the fireworks should aim to get there early.

Other good viewing areas include The Queen Anne’s Battery, which overlooks the firing site, and around the Mount Batten pub, although viewing here is side-on. Behind Mount Batten, in the Jennycliff area is another popular viewing spot.

Other entertainment on the Hoe during both evenings will include a fun fair and live music. Food and drink will also be provided on the Hoe and along Madeira Road.
