This weekend, why not put your stone skimming skills to the test in the picturesque Lake District?
The annual All England Open Stone Skimming Championships will be taking place on Saturday at the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park on the edge of Lake Windermere in Cumbria.
People of all ages are welcome to enter the championships, as individuals or teams. There is no need to register beforehand, simply turn up on the day to take part. There will be contests for men, women, under 11s, and 11 to 16 year olds, as well as a team competition.
The aim of the contest is to try to skim a stone the furthest distance across the lake. Each entrant will get three stones to skim. For the skim to count, the stone must bounce on the water at least three times and stay within the designated lane. Teams should consist of four people and the average score of each player’s best skim will be recorded.
The event is organised by the South Cumbria Rivers Trust and money raised will go towards conservation work in the South Lakes area.
