The 12 Hour Lawn Mower Race, which takes place this weekend, is the flagship event organised by the BLMRA (British Lawn Mower Racing Association).

The race features a traditional ‘Le Mans’ style start, with the riders racing to their machines, before the endurance challenge begins. Teams race at speeds up to 50 mph, with racing continuing into the night.

Lawn mower racing isn’t a new invention as the first race is thought to have taken place in 1968; although the racing as we know it began in 1973, after the idea was developed over a few pints in a Sussex pub. Since then, the main objectives have always been no sponsorship, no commercialism, no cash prizes and no modifying of engines; making it a low cost sport that is fun and accessible.

When: 3rd August 2019, qualifying starts at 3.15pm and racing at 8pm
Where: Five Oaks, near Billingshurst in West Sussex
£: Admission costs £6 for adults and free for children
