The Big Cheese festival will take place in Caerphilly with medieval entertainment, Vikings, a cheese market, quirky walkabout performers and a Great Cheese Race.
The Big Cheese is an annual free festival which celebrates the history, heritage and culture of Caerphilly. The festival’s quirky highlight is the Great Cheese Race on the Friday.
The Great Cheese Race sees teams of four race around a special course in the grounds of the castle. The teams must carry truckles of cheese around the course on stretchers. There will be races for children and adults, and prizes will be awarded for the winners and those in the best fancy dress. Visitors can cheer on the competitors in the dairy dash from the festival site.
Over the Saturday and Sunday there will be entertainment including re-enactment displays, musical entertainment, educational activities, food and craft stalls, cookery demonstrations, a funfair, street theatre and liquid refreshment from four bars.
Over the weekend, watch re-enactment groups as they reconstruct 10th, 11th and 14th century life and battles. The interactive living history encampments and displays will illustrate the different periods of Welsh history.
There will be a big cheese market, showcasing some of the best cheese traders in the country, as well as food halls full of local food and drink. The market will be full of Welsh produce, including cakes, bakes, preserves and some tempting tipples.
