Can you cut it at Somerset’s lawn mower challenge?

By Caroline King - June 3, 2019Posted in : Alternative Sport

This weekend, swap mowing the lawn with something a little more exciting, as Red Bull’s Cut It arrives in Cheddar, Somerset.

Red Bull Cut It Lawn Mower Race 2019
Participants compete in the Red Bull Cut It Lawn Mower racing in Axbridge.

The lawn mower racing event is free to watch and spectators will be able to watch competitors race around three specially devised courses, reaching speeds up to 50mph. There will be two different competitions taking place, the first for British Lawnmower Racing Association machines and a second ‘tourist’ class event.

The machines used for racing are modified ride-on mowers with the cutting blades removed. Lawn mower racing isn’t a new invention as the first race is thought to have taken place 1968. A few years later, in 1973, the sport as we know it today was formed over a few pints in a West Sussex pub.

Last year’s winner, Mike Cresswell, at the Red Bull Cut It Lawn Mower racing event.

This is the second year that Red Bull has hosted the event and it promises another action-packed weekend around courses with twists, turns, jumps and rollers. There will also be a chance for spectators to have a go on a racing lawn mower in their free ‘Give it a Mow’ sessions.

When: 8th & 9th June 2019
Where: Chestnut House, Old Coach Road, Axbridge, Somerset BS26 2JB
£: Free to watch and take part in the ‘Give it a Mow’ sessions (book in advance online). It costs £15 to take part in the race
