An urban bike race with unusual challenges

By Caroline King - June 26, 2019Posted in : Alternative Sport, Museum

The Queen Victoria Cyclo-Cross is a urban bike race with a difference, taking place at Blists Hill Victorian Town in Shropshire.

The event attracts around 300 cyclists, who race around the Victorian town during the evening. This unique urban cyclo-cross race presents unusual and formidable challenges, as the cyclists try to ride their modern bikes through the museum’s streets.

The inaugural event in 2013 was a huge success, and it has continued annually since then. It was described in Cycling Weekly magazine as ‘Britain’s Craziest Bike Race’. Each year the course is improved, to keep the race interesting, with features such as the fearsome ‘Hay Inclined Plane’.

Between watching the races, spectators will be able to wander around the town to explore the industrial monuments and landmarks of the 52 acre site.

Cyclo-cross is one of the fastest growing types of cycle sport. Urban events have become particularly popular in the last couple of years, especially as they offer opportunities for all ages to compete at the same race meeting.

Blists Hill Victorian Town aims to give visitors the chance to experience life as it was in Victorian times. The recreated Victorian town has streets, shops and houses for visitors to explore.

When: 29th June 2019
Where: Blists Hill Victorian Town, Ironbridge, Shropshire
£: It costs £4 per person to watch
