What is it?

This Sunday, a parade and march will be taking place in Central London to commemorate the execution of Charles I of England.

This annual event, known as King’s Army Annual March and Parade, follows the route taken by the king as he took his last steps towards the scaffold which was constructed for his execution.

Charles I was executed in 1649 after being found guilty of treason against England. He was publicly beheaded on the 30th January. Charles I spent his last day at St James’ Palace, before he was taken to the execution spot, outside the Banqueting House.

The parade, carried out by the English Civil War Society, begins at St James’ Palace on the Mall at around 11am, and ends at the Banqueting House in Whitehall.  A wreath is laid at the execution spot and a short service is held there.

The English Civil War Society aim to authentically re-create the 17th century civil and military life. The English Civil War Society have been commemorating this event for about 40 years, although not many Londoners know it takes place.
