What is it?
The annual Newent Onion Fayre will take place on Saturday 8th September in Gloucestershire. The quirky highlight of this traditional fayre is the somewhat eye-watering Onion Eating Competition.
The competition features two contests, one for women and one for men. The women must chomp their way through a peeled raw five ounce onion, whilst men get a seven ounce onion. The winner is the first person to finish eating their onion. Participants must hold their arms outstretched and mouth wide open to prove they are finished. Many of the previous winners have managed the challenge in under two minutes!
Those who wish to take part in the competition this year should leave their name with the team at the main stage on the morning of the fayre, and turn up at 1pm ready for the contest.
Newent Onion Fayre also features an onion show, a food village, a fair, live music, and a dog show. This year there will be a funion zone with activities and entertainment for the younger visitors.
The food village will feature plenty of local food, as well as some more exotic and unusual produce. The dog show will feature ten fun classes, including prettiest bitch, best rescue, and dog the judge would most like to take home. Following the show, the arena will host more dog-themed entertainment.
The fayre will begin with a grand parade, and will also feature stalls around the town, an acoustic stage, entertainment by the lake, exhibitions, demonstrations, dancing and street entertainers.
The Onion Fayre marks the end of summer and the start of harvest. The event has been going strong since the 13th century.
