What is it?

As the summer of sport comes to an end, a small town in Wales is gearing up for some altogether different games…

The World Alternative Games will be taking place in Llanwrtyd Wells, from Saturday 11th to Monday 27th August, with more than 60 quirky sporting events taking place over the two weeks.  Expect everything from bog snorkelling and hay bale tossing, to finger jousting and toe wrestling.

The 2018 games will begin on Saturday 11th with the Summer Cider Cycle, Wheelchair Rugby 7s, a slow bicycle race, a bicycle the wrong way race, and the Mountain Bike Bunny Hop. For those who aren’t so great on two wheels, Sunday 12th will include 4 Square (a ball game), worm charming, egg throwing, a space hopper race, finger jousting, backward running, gravy wrestling and wheelbarrow racing. The games will continue on the Monday with a zombie race, pooh sticks and a children’s day with fun games and activities.

The following week (17th to 20th) will see more quirky sports attempted with a crempog (Welsh pancake) race, the Welsh Open Corinthian Conker Championship, Russian egg roulette, a multi sport time trial, barrel rolling, toe wrestling, hay bale tossing, woolsack carrying, horseshoe throwing, pea shooting, dyke jumping, a scooter slalom, snail racing, and Pingpongo (that’s table tennis with obstacles).

The final week (24th to 27th) will feature a stiletto race, a mad shopper challenge, office chair racing, the World Bog Triathlon, Corinthian Belly Flopping, the Corinthian Stone Skimming Championship, plank racing, ditch racing, wife carrying, husband dragging and a single boat tug of war.

One of the highlights of the final week will be the 33rd annual World Bog Snorkelling Championships, which usually attracts competitors from all over the world.
