Newport Nocturne 2018 - Shropshire

Racing for beer at the Newport Nocturne

When: 18th August 2018

Where: Newport town centre, Shropshire

£: Free to watch

What is it?

The Newport Nocturne, Shropshire’s annual floodlit cycle race, will take place on Saturday 18th August.

The race is famous not only for being held after dark, but also for its tradition of rewarding winners with their weight in beer!

This year, the winners of both the men’s and the women’s races will win the unique prize.  The prize is weighed out on huge scales and is a favourite with fans and riders alike.  The award comes courtesy of Wood’s brewery who will, rather aptly, be using their Shropshire Lad and Shropshire Lass beers as the prizes.

The Nocturne was Britain’s first floodlit bike race and has featured cycling stars such as this year’s Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, Sean Kelly, Mark Cavendish and Robert Millar. The free event regularly attracts over 10,000 spectators.

Wood’s is a cask ale brewery in the tiny village of Wistanstow, near Craven Arms in Shropshire.  The brewery will be hosting activities for visitors to the Newport Nocturne to enjoy.  There will also be a competition for visitors to prove their Shropshireness.
