What is it?
This autumn, why not watch a racing car sport with a difference? British Pedal Car Championship events take place from March to October, with the last three events of the season challenging teams to sprints, a 100 mile endurance race and a seven hour endurance race.
Pedal car racing is a demanding but friendly endurance team sport, featuring races of up to 24 hours in duration. A pedal car is simply a human-powered, rather than motorised, car; and for the races, teams share the effort by driving for as many laps as possible before handing over to the next team member.
Teams quite often build their own cars, complying with race specifications, which means that there is usually an interesting array of designs on display at the events. The teams compete at events throughout the year at various circuits, racing for around 60 hours in total over the season.
On Sunday 2nd September teams will be competing in the 100 Miles Endurance at the Blackbushe circuit in Surrey, and the final event of the year is the 7 Hour Endurance at Curborough circuit in Staffordshire on Saturday 6th October.
Pedal car racing is only just beginning to attract spectators to the sport, but anyone is welcome to head along on race day to watch. So, why not take a picnic and watch this fascinating sporting challenge in action?
The championship is organised by The British Federation of Pedal Car Racing.
