A competitor tries their luck at stone skimming

When: 18th August 2018, 10am – 4pm

Where: Fell Foot Park, Newby Bridge, Windermere, Cumbria LA12 8NN

£: There is a small fee to enter the competition (£3 for adults, £2 for youths and £1 for children) and a charge for the car park.

What is it?

The annual All England Open Stone Skimming Championships will be taking place on Saturday 18th August at the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park in Cumbria.

People of all ages are welcome to enter the championships, as individuals or teams.  There is no need to register beforehand, simply turn up on the day to take part.  There will be contests for men, women, under 11s, 11 to 16 years, and teams.

The aim of the contest is to try to skim a stone the furthest distance across the lake.  Each entrant will get three stones to skim.  For the skim to count, the stone must bounce on the water at least three times and stay within the designated lane.  Teams should consist of four people and the average score of each player’s best skim will be recorded.

As well as the championships, there will be stalls, river activities, real ale, a BBQ, and ice cream.

The event is organised by the South Cumbria Rivers Trust and money raised will go towards conservation work in the South Lakes area.
