What is it?
The 2018 World Pasty Championships will take place at the Eden Project in Cornwall on Saturday 3rd March. Competitors are expected to come from all over the world to take part in the ‘Oggy Oscars’.
Categories in this year’s World Pasty Championships will include professional, company, amateur and junior, for both traditional Cornish and non-Cornish pasties.
The championships will be welcoming back one of the major winners from last year, Gerry Ramier, from St. Catherine’s in Ontario, Canada, who won the Cornish Pasty Professional category last year.
Ramier, who runs the Piskie Pie Company and cooked his pasty in Cornwall to ensure it was eligible for the Cornish category, plans to defend his title and also compete in the Open Savoury Professional category for non-traditional pasties.
The day isn’t just about pasties, and celebrates all things Cornish with live music and activities for all the family. The music line-up will include Dodgy, 3 Daft Monkeys, Hedluv + Passman, Jamie Yost, Matthew Gordon Price and The Countrymen. Activities will include pasty workshops, a pasty pageant and children’s craft workshops.
The day will end with the Oggy Oscars awards ceremony, where winners will be rewarded with one of the infamous pasty shaped clay trophies.
The event takes place as a fitting end to the first ever Cornish Pasty Week (25th February to 3rd March). If you can’t make it down for the championships, why not celebrate by treating yourself to a pasty instead?
