What is it?
This year’s Rye Bay Scallop Week will take place from Saturday 24th February to Sunday 4th March in East Sussex.
During the week, restaurants will be serving a variety of scallop dishes to visitors. In addition to the food, there will be a Scallop School, live music, walks, talks and demonstrations.
The Globe Inn Marsh will have a special Scallop Week menu, including Bonfire Scallop Mini Pizzas. Marino’s Fish Bar will once again be battering their scallops and serving them with chips and a choice of sweet chilli or tartar sauce.
For something a little more fancy, The George in Rye will have dishes such as Rye Bay Scallops on Cornish Crab and Smoked Pancetta Pearl Barley Risotto, and Pan Fried Rye Bay Scallops with Boudin Noir, Samphire and Celeriac.
This year, The Ship Inn will have a Winemaker’s Dinner on Wednesday 28th February, featuring a five course scallop tasting dinner hosted by Victoria Ash (head winemaker at the Hush Heath Winery), who will talk diners through the pairing of each course with a glass of wine.
Visitors can join the Scallop School at Webbe’s, with courses on Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th February, and Monday 12th March. Course participants will get to prepare and eat a seven-course luncheon.
Other highlights during the week will include talk and taste sessions at Simmons Quay with shucking demonstrations, and a mix of uplifting sea ballads, fishy songs and shanties with Rye’s ukulele group at The Queen’s Head Inn.
And for those who don’t have an appetite for scallops there will be history walks, nature walks, theatrical performances and plenty of live music throughout the week.
