When: 17th September 2017, from 10am
Where: Hunstanton, Norfolk
What is it?
On Sunday 17th September, Hunstanton will host their 2017 Soap Box Derby, with forty teams competing to be the fastest. The derby will be the highlight in a day of free entertainment, organised by the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk.
The event will begin at 10am with entertainment based around a stage on The Green, hosted by KLFM, as the karts undergo their all important safety checks. Battle of the Bands 2017 runner-up Sam Coe and the Long Shadows, and Battle of the Bands 2017 winner Flint Moore will be performing.
The races will begin at noon, with each team making two timed runs down the course. The route begins at the top of Boston Square, then takes a 90-degree left turn onto Cliff Parade, taking in a ramp, and ends at the mini-roundabout.
After the races, spectators are welcome to take a closer look at the karts lined up in the holding area by the stage, as the judges deliberate. Children’s entertainment on the day will include inflatables, and a performance from immersive theatre company Kidz Party Times!.
The prize-giving will begin at 5pm, with trophies awarded to the fastest junior team, the fastest adult team, and the best-decorated kart. This will be followed by a performance from local band Bear Club.
The Soap Box Derby event is part of the regeneration of the Hunstanton Heritage Gardens, reviving an old seaside tradition. Soap box racing was popular in Hunstanton in the 1960s and it is hoped that this year’s event will draw just as many crowds.
The regeneration of the Hunstanton Heritage Gardens is a £1.3m project funded by the borough council and the National Lottery through a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund.
