What is it?
The 2017 East Allington Whacky Races will take place on Saturday 30th September in the Devon village. The event sees competitors race their gravity-powered karts down the village’s steep hill.
The rules for the Whacky Races are fairly simple. All karts must be powered by gravity only, no pedals or sneaky engines allowed. The karts should be built with no sharp edges or loose glass, and competitors should wear a crash helmet. Finally, the karts should be as wacky as possible!
The karts race one at a time, against the clock. The fastest kart on the day will win the coveted Luscombe Trophy. There will also be a prize for the best looking kart.
This year’s event will begin at 11am, with races taking place throughout the day, finishing with the Dick Dastardly Decider at 3.30pm. The races will see veterans, newbies and reigning champion Julian Meek, competing for this year’s title.
This year will also see two new competitions taking place between the races. The Rock and Gravel’s Boulder Rolling Challenge will see participants aiming to push a beer barrel around a course in the fastest possible time, and later in the day the Chugabug Chuck-a-Ball Chase will see 1000 coloured balls released from the top of the hill as part of a special ball lotto. The balls will be numbered and sold off to spectators prior to the release, with a prize for the first ball to hurtle down the hill and cross the finish line.
In addition to the Whacky Races and games, there will be a bouncy castle, live music, a BBQ, beer tent, pasty stall, and ice-cream. The village hall will be hosting stalls with teas, coffees, cakes, fudge and kids clothing, plus there will be face painting and children’s activities.
All the proceeds from the East Allington Whacky Races event will go to Devon Air Ambulance, local groups and organisations.
