What is it?
The Big Cheese festival will take place in Caerphilly, Wales, from Friday 28th to Sunday 30th July, with street entertainers, living history encampments, live music, a traditional funfair, a quirky cheese-themed race, and a cheese market.
The Big Cheese is an annual free festival, celebrating the history, heritage and culture of Caerphilly. This will be the 20th Big Cheese festival, and this year’s entertainment will include folk dancing, falconry, fire eating, minstrels and troubadours. The festival kicks off on the Friday from 3pm with the opening of the funfair, followed by live music at 6pm, and the Great Cheese Race at 6.30pm. The live music will come from Tobias Robertson, the Pitchforks, Chroma, and Johnny Cage and the Voodoo Groove. The Friday will finish with a firework display at 10pm.
The Great Cheese Race will see teams of four race, carrying truckles of cheese on stretchers, around a special course. There will be races for children and adults, and prizes will be awarded for the winners and those in the best fancy dress. This year’s fancy dress theme is ‘Myths and Legends’, so expect to see plenty of unicorns and dragons battling it out.
Over the Saturday and Sunday there will be entertainment from 11am until 7pm, including re-enactment displays, musical entertainment, educational activities, food and craft stalls, an animal marquee and traditional funfair.
In the Re-enactment Arena there will be a variety of interactive living history encampments and re-enactment displays, illustrating the many different periods of Welsh history.
Watch the Knights of Longshanks, Mario Morris Street Theatre, the Company of Chivalry, a lute player, and Vikings, and hear tales from Chance Encounters walkabout storytelling. See how food was traditionally prepared and cooked, test weapons, and watch Vikings in combat.
The Castle Arena will have martial arts demonstrations and samba workshops. A craft market will feature silverwork, glasswork, textiles, artwork, slate and organic herbs from a range of craftspeople.
The Food and Cheese Market will see food producers from around Wales with goods including Welsh cheese, cakes, chutney, liqueurs, cider and wine. This year there will be 14 cheese producers at the market with plenty of samples on offer for visitors to try. The Blaenafon Cheddar Company, The Great British Cheese Company and Snowdonia Cheese will be amongst the stallholders.
Entertainment in the 14th century Great Hall will include Aber Valley Male Voice Choir, Caerphilly Community Chorus, The Melody Makers, the White Rose Singers, and Crosskeys Silver Band.
Further musical entertainment will take place in the Big Top Tent and Acoustic Tent with CWCW, The Moon Birds, Darren Eedens, John Adams, the Maddie Jones Band, and Captain Accident and the Disasters.
