What is it?
The people of Morpeth will be welcoming visitors to the town as they showcase Northumberland’s traditions in an annual festival of music, dance, craft and dialect.
This year’s Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering will take place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd April, with a medieval theme.
This will be the 50th Northumbrian Gathering, which will kick off on the Friday with art and craft exhibitions, family art and dance workshops, a gala concert and storytelling. There will also be outdoor entertainment including Punch & Judy, and rent a peasant. Adults can also learn to play the pipes in a day.
On the Saturday there will be further workshops including clog dancing and songwriting. Other events will include children’s storytelling, Tudor times living history events, and bell ringing. There will also be live music, a pageant, and Morpeth Castle will have an open day. A Muckle Blethor will see poets and writers performing in local dialects, and a Civil War skirmish will take place in the park. Other highlights on Saturday will feature a bagpipe competition, twilight tales and a fire eating event.
The gathering will round off on the Sunday with an orienteering event, outdoor entertainers, tours of the council chamber, herb garden tours, music from Werca’s Folk Choir, and old English songs and stories of the Redcoats with The King’s Shilling.
