What is it?
Vegetable lovers can celebrate the asparagus season with the British Asparagus Festival, running from 23rd April to 21st June in the Vale of Evesham.
The festival calendar begins on Sunday 23rd April, celebrating St George’s Day and start of the English asparagus growing season, with the Great English Asparagus Run. This quirky celebration involves the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire taking a giant round of asparagus, in a classic Morgan car, across the country. Why? Well, why not!
Asparabus Coach Tours will this year take place on 11th and 18th May, giving passengers the chance to learn more about the area and its links to the vegetable.
The next event in the asparagus festival calendar is the Asparagus Family Colour Fun Run on 28th May. Expect asparagus green paint bombs to rain down on you as you manoeuvre the multi-terrain family friendly run. Visitors to the run should look out for Gus the Asparagus Man, the world-famous Asparamancer (who allegedly can predict your fortune by the fall of the spears).
The Famous Fleece Asparagus Auctions will take place on 28th May and 4th June. The asparagus auctions will take place at the historic Fleece Inn, Bretforton. Bretforton Silver Band will entertain the crowds and the event will raise money for the band’s instruments.
One of the highlights of the calendar is Asparafest, which this year takes place from 2nd to 4th June at Ashdown Farm near Evesham. The asparagus festival features live music, food, family activities, stalls and real ale.
The live music this year will include 3 Daft Monkeys, The Pyrates, FiddleBop, and the Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican. There will be family friendly entertainment and craft activities from Junkfish, the Quack Pack, Easy Peasy Cookery School, Falconry Days and Worcester Barn Owls. There will also be steam engines and vintage cars on display.
Finally, the Vale of Evesham National Morris Weekend will take place from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th June, to round off the events. Morris teams from all over the country visit the area for the weekend.
