When: 21st – 23rd April 2017
Where: Marsden, West Yorkshire
What is it?
Marsden Cuckoo Day Festival will take place on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd April (and hopefully something extra on Sunday too), in and around the West Yorkshire village.
The festival springs from an old local cuckoo legend. Legend has it, that the people of Marsden were aware that when the cuckoo arrived, so did the spring and the sunshine. So, the local residents tried to prolong the sunshine by making the cuckoo stay longer. They built a wall around the bird, but unfortunately the wall wasn’t high enough to keep the cuckoo in and it flew off.
To celebrate the coming of spring and the cuckoo connection, the Marsden Cuckoo Day Festival now takes place annually. This year’s festival will feature artistic workshops, a craft fair, a village procession, maypole and Morris dancing, a duck race and music from a local band.
