Where: The Green Market, Borough Market, 8 Southwark Street, London SE1 1TL
What is it?
Borough Market’s Evening of Cheese is back, with an even greater variety of weird and wonderful cheeses from all over the world, on Wednesday 14th December.
The evening will offer cheese samples, Christmas cheese board shopping, a ‘cracking of the parmesan wheel’ competition, and an exclusive demonstration by Michelin-starred chef Luca Marchini
Traders from up and down the country, and across the continent, will be gathering in the historic market for the event. There will be more than 20 stalls, jam-packed with some of the world’s most unique cheeses. These will include the extraordinary Époisses from Burgundy which has been dipped in local brandy, and Bleu de Gex from The French Comte.
Sample the delicious (and perhaps surprising) varieties, learn about the craft behind cheese making from internationally renowned experts, and purchase some lovely unique additions to the Christmas cheese board.
Along with the abundant selection of cheeses, the evening will also shed light on some of the best pairings and accompaniments, from traditional wines and chutneys, to the latest trends of ciders and honeycomb.
Gone are the generic fruit pickles, as damson chutneys and honeycomb become the condiments of this year. Field and Flower’s Devon honeycomb is one standout option, particularly when combined with Isle of Mull cheddar, as well as other white cheeses.
Alsop and Walker’s Lord London cheese, with its unique conical shape will be available; a favourite of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, which featured on their menu at the Royal wedding.
Luca Marchini, the Michelin-starred chef from L’Erba del Re restaurant in Modena, will be making an exclusive appearance in the public demo kitchen, starting at 6.30pm. Following the demo, Marchini will be competing in the ‘cracking of the parmesan wheel’. A head-to-head competition against one of Borough’s finest traders, Bianca e Mora. The traditional Italian activity aims to see who can break the hefty wheel first, not a task for the faint hearted.
There will also be a special raffle, with the chance to win three sets of gift vouchers for Marchini’s cooking school in Italy.
