What is it?

The World Championship Coracle Race 2016 will take place on the River Severn at Pengwern Boat Club on Friday 16th September.

There will be 36 teams of four competing in relay races to win the World Coracle Championships Trophy, all whilst raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

As well as the coracle races, there will be children’s entertainment, a BBQ, ice cream, cakes, a Pimms tent, and a bar.

Coracles on the river

This will be the 8th time the championships have taken place, and last year the event raised £22,000 for charity. Pengwern Boat Club was founded in 1871, and can be found on the riverside in Shrewsbury town centre.

Coracles are small, keel-less boats, which were once used for fishing and transportation.  These days, the coracle is mainly used for leisure purposes.
