What is it?
The annual Newent Onion Fayre takes place on Saturday 10th September in Gloucestershire. This traditional fayre features the quirky, eye-watering, Onion Eating Competition.
There are two contests, one for women and one for men. The women must chomp their way through a peeled raw 5 ounce onion, whilst men get a 7 ounce onion. The winner is the first person to finish eating the onion. Participants must hold their arms outstretched and mouth wide open to prove they are finished. Most of the previous winners have managed the challenge in under 2 minutes.
Those who wish to take part this year should leave their name with the team at the main stage on the day of the competition, and turn up at 1pm for the contest.
Newent Onion Fayre also features an onion show, a food festival, a fair, live music, and a dog show. This year the live music comes from Queen II, Foreign Affairs, Jack of All, and Roving Crows. The food festival will feature plenty of local food, as well as cookery demonstrations throughout the day. The dog show takes place at 11am and features both competition classes and novelty classes (including the best fancy dressed dog).
The Onion Fayre marks the end of summer and the start of harvest. The event has been going strong since the 13th century.
