What is it?
On Saturday 15th October, the 64th National Town Criers’ Championship will take place in Hastings, East Sussex. Town criers will be travelling from all over the country to take part in this quirky championship event.
Judging in the competition will be based on volume, diction, clarity and inflection. The MC for the event will be Hastings own town crier, Jon Bartholomew.
Historically town criers were used as a way communicating news to the masses, as many people were illiterate.
The town criers would attract the attention of the people by ringing a bell and shouting ‘oyez’, meaning ‘hear ye’. These days, of course, the town crier’s purpose is mainly ceremonial.
Town crying competitions take place across the UK all year round. The National Town Criers’ Championship in Hastings is one of the more established competitions and takes place annually.
