What is it?
This bank holiday Monday in Gloucestershire, footballers will be swapping the turf for water, in a football match with a difference.
Football in the River is an annual event that takes place in the River Windrush at Bourton-on-the-Water. This quirky game of football has been played there annually for over 100 hundred years.
The match lasts 30 minutes and consists of two teams of six from Bourton Rovers Football Club. It is free to watch but you may be wise to wear some splash-proof clothing as the game is quite competitive and water tends to get splashed everywhere. Watch the video below of 2013’s event and see how wet the spectators get!
There is usually a fête on the day of the match, beginning at 11am. The football begins at around 4pm. The event usually attracts hundreds of spectators, so get there in plenty of time to see the action.
Bourton-on-the-Water is a popular tourist spot in the Cotswolds. The River Windrush runs through the picturesque village, and the village is dotted with pretty little bridges crossing the water. There are a selection of shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as a motor museum, and bird park.
