When: 21st August 2016, from 6.30am
Where: Bramble Bank, in the middle of the Solent, near Cowes
What is it?
The Bramble Bank Cricket Match is an annual event between the Royal Southern Yacht Club, based in Hamble, Hampshire, and the Island Sailing Club, based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
Each year the clubs challenge one another to a rather unusual cricket match, which takes place in the middle of the Solent.
You might wonder how this is possible, but Bramble Bank is a sandbar situated in the Solent. This sandbar is uncovered during low tides, making it possible to play a very wet game of cricket on the sand.
The match is more of a fun event than a serious one, and this year’s challenge will take place on Sunday 21st August. This year’s match will take place at a rather early 6.30am and will have Sir Robin Knox-Johnston playing as part of the Royal Southern Yacht Club team.
Despite its location, the match still manages to attract a few hundred spectators every year, and has featured on several TV shows, due to its eccentricity.
