What is it?
Prams. We spend a large part of our early lives in them and then splashes of our later lives pushing them. In between, these titans of the pavement lie gathering dust in our garages and sheds, unloved and often forgotten.
Now it’s time to bring them out and revive a Great British tradition, that of bombing about with a pram in a race to the death (well not death, but certainly something quite serious).
On Saturday 23rd July, the inaugural Great British Pram Race will take place at the iconic Alexandra Palace.
There will be three main race categories. The Kids (and parents) Pram Race will be split into two categories, 3 – 6 years and 7 – 12 years. The kids races will begin at about 1pm. The Adult Pram Race is a 3.56km run around the south slopes of Alexandra Palace. The adult race will begin at about 2pm.
Prizes will be awarded, not only to the winning teams, but for the best pimped out buggy (fancy dress is fine as well).
Behind the race are Club de Fromage and Uncool Events, well know for their somewhat off-beat events. Promoter Carl Hill says, “We are incredibly excited about bringing the noble art of pram racing back to London. Once a regular event in London (there was even a motorised one at Crystal Palace in the 1930s), the pram race has fallen out of favour in our fair city and survives only in the regions, which is something of a national disgrace. As such we are proud to revive this sport of kings and make some cash for some excellent charities in the process.”
All profits from the event will be going to Parkinsons UK and MNDA.
So don’t be too posh to push, and get ready for the Great British Pram Race.
