What is it?
This year’s Cumbria Steam Gathering takes place on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July at Cark Airfield.
For over four decades, the Cumbria Steam & Vintage Vehicle Society has been bringing together vintage vehicles from far and wide to the airfield in Flookburgh, for one massive summer gathering.
Highlights at this year’s gathering will include a sheep show, lawn mower racing, and mechanical music.
In addition, the Purple Helmets motor cycle display team will be showing off their hilarious and unique routines. There will be a Segway events display where visitors can receive instruction and try out a machine.
Richard Savory`s Sheep Show will be returning to this year’s gathering, explaining fascinating facts you never knew about sheep. Music will be provided by the Pantonic All Stars Orchestra, and lovers of mechanical music will be catered for by a number of fair organs dotted around the site.
In the working area of the rally site there will be demonstrations of agricultural machinery, and the Morecambe Bay Archery Club exhibiting their skills. The North West Lawn Mower Racers will be staging their own frantic, low-cost version of motor racing.
On Saturday, look out for local artist Evsie who will be creating on the spot caricatures of likely (and unlikely) characters around the showfield. On Sunday visitors can meet Stan and Ollie, the visiting Laurel and Hardy lookalikes, as they mingle with the crowds.
There will be over 1300 exhibits at the 2016 Cumbria Steam Gathering, representing the whole spectrum of classic and vintage vehicles that have been lovingly and painstakingly brought back into use, many from near scrap condition.
Arena parades will take place throughout the weekend and each morning. Visitors will have the chance to drive a steam engine in the main arena in return for a small donation to a local charity.
The popular collections and craft marquees will be displaying artefacts and skills from bygone days, and a food hall will be providing the best of local produce. There will also be an array of trade stands, and for those who are involved in a restoration project, the Autojumble stalls will have plenty of spare parts.
