The 21st London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival will be taking place on Sunday 26th June 2016 at the London Regatta Centre. The festival will feature a programme of racing, entertainment and an array of street food.
The free, family friendly event is expected to attract up to 10,000 visitors from across the UK and overseas. The dragon boat racing will have over forty club, corporate and amateur teams, battling it out for trophies. Everyone from absolute beginners to seasoned paddlers will be taking part in the competition.
This year’s festival will include over seven hours of dragon boat racing, martial arts and tai chi displays, and traditional Chinese lion dancing. A food festival will be offering the flavours of Eastern Asia, and live music on the festival stage will showcase new music and entertainment from East and West.
On the festival stage, DJ Alice, from Spectrum radio, will present new music and entertainment from both corners of the globe. Acts will include alternative rock band Canvas Wall and urban pop group Pryme Kingz.
The food festival, offering the tastes of South East Asia, will include Indonesian satays and nasi goreng from Ayam Happy, and crispy duck wraps from Khay’s Kitchen. A new innovation for this year will be an all-day breakfast from Le Swine, serving bacon and duck egg rolls from 8:30am.
The Caravan Bar Company will be opening their unique retro caravan bar, serving Pimms, Prosecco, wine, beer and soft drinks. There will also be a raffle, with prizes including a pair of return flights to Hong Kong and dinner for two at Hutong at The Shard.
The racing will begin at 10am and the entertainment at 12pm. At 12.30pm the dragon eye-dotting ceremony will take place, and the raffle draw will close the events at 5.55pm.
Dragon boat festivals originated in ancient southern central China some 2,500 years ago, along the banks of Yangtze River. Today dragon boat racing is one of the most popular water sports, both in China and internationally.
London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is organised as a fund-raiser with proceeds donated to nominated charities supported by London Chinatown Lions Club.
The event is organised by London Chinatown Lions Club with support from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, The Hong Kong Executives Club, London Chinatown Chinese Association and The London Chinatown Chinese Community Centre.
