What is it?
This year’s Low Wood No Wood Cardboard Boat Race will take place on Saturday 14th May 2016 with (fool)hardy competitors trying to make it around the water course before sinking.
This wacky annual competition sees brave teams take to Lake Windermere in boats made of cardboard. Every year the event sees teams come up with a myriad of inventive designs and costumes.
The race rules are fairly simple. All of the boats taking part have to be made completely of cardboard and only be propelled by paddle. All of the teams need a Captain and someone to do the paddling.
To win, the teams must navigate around the buoys on the course and back again. The races are conducted in heats and the winning team is the one with the best time. To make it even more tricky, paddlers must stay in the boat during the entire race.
This year awards will be given for the best designed boat, best dressed paddler, the best youth team, and the Titanic award for most spectacular sinking.
The Low Wood No Wood is a family event, and in addition to the race there will be a bouncy castle, face painting, a bbq and a raffle.
Proceeds from the event will go towards St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston and the Lake District Calvert Trust.
