What is it?
This year’s Record Store Day will take place on Saturday 16th April 2016.
The original idea for Record Store Day was conceived by Chris Brown, and was founded in 2007 as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA. The UK quickly followed suit.
Record Store Day, now in its 9th year, has become one of the biggest annual events on the music calendar. It celebrates all that is unique and indie about our high streets. RSD has become a true catalyst in re-engaging music fans with record shops across the UK, as well as recapturing a national love of the vinyl format. Exclusive vinyl releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. Hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances.
Over 250 labels are set to release limited edition records for the 9th annual Record Store Day. Among this year’s releases, labels are choosing to put new music at the forefront of their offerings. New material comes from artists such as Foals, Primal Scream and Bastille. Four out of five releases come from independent labels, making it one of the most eclectic and interesting Record Store Day lists to date. From Cavern of Anti-Matter, to Django Django to The Small Faces, there is something for all music fans to enjoy.
Sitting alongside the usual Record Store Day classics and a whole host of new music, there’s also a scattering of innovative releases providing new ways of consuming music. Alcopop! Records have continued the curation of the Sensible Record Labels compilation. It will feature tracks from a range of UK labels including Trangressive, Fortuna Pop, Holy Roar and Elefant. The release comes on individual splattered, multi-coloured vinyl with a download card containing up to 150mb of content from each label.
