When: 22nd & 23rd April 2016
Where: Marsden, West Yorkshire
What is it?
Marsden Cuckoo Day Festival will take place on Friday 22nd April and Saturday 23rd April 2016, in and around the West Yorkshire village.
The festival springs from an old local cuckoo legend. The people of Marsden were aware that when the cuckoo arrived so did the spring and the sunshine. The people tried to prolong the sunshine by making the cuckoo stay longer. So they built a wall around the bird. Unfortunately the wall wasn’t high enough to keep the cuckoo in and it flew off.
To celebrate the coming of spring and the cuckoo connection, the Marsden Cuckoo Day Festival now takes place annually. This year’s festival will feature artistic workshops, an all-day craft fair, a village procession, maypole and Morris dancing. The event culminates with a duck race and music from a local band.
