What is it?
The 11th annual World’s Original Marmalade Awards and Festival takes place on 19th and 20th March at three locations in Cumbria. A free ‘Orange Express’ shuttle bus will operate between the three venues, Dalemain Mansion, the Rheged Centre and Penrith town centre.
The event is a celebration of all things marmalade and features a weekend of fruity themed events for the whole family. At Dalemain Mansion and Gardens there will be over 2000 marmalades on display as part of the awards, with 500 marmalades available to taste and buy.
At Penrith town centre there will be an artisan market, a teddy bear zip wire, storytelling, Paddington Bear, cookery demonstrations, talks, tastings and bell ringing. Free talks on the Saturday at The George Hotel include From Bitter to Sweet – Honey and Marmalade Through Time by Eddie Kay and Ivan Day on A Potted History of Marmalade in Lakeland.
At the Rheged Centre on the Saturday there will be workshops where you can decorate a marmalade jar or make marmalade themed bunting. There will be comedy cooking performances, and a special screening of Paddington.
On the Sunday at Rheged there will be cookery demonstrations, a Paddington themed tea party, a food and craft market, interactive storytelling and a clay bear workshop.
As part of the festival, Ullswater Steamers will be offering free travel to members of the public who bring along a jar of marmalade.
