What is it?
This month Birmingham will be playing host to some of the best cabaret acts in the UK, as The Old Joint Stock Theatre hosts the first ever Birmingham Cabaret Festival.
The festival will bring critically acclaimed and well-known acts to the second city, with an aim to develop and stimulate the city’s small but thriving cabaret community.
Cabaret has undergone a renaissance in the past couple of decades, with music, comedy, circus, drag and burlesque acts, frequently dominating the headlines at festivals and venues across the world. Cabaret is often the place to discover the newest and most daring cross-disciplinary theatre.
The intimate one hundred seat studio theatre above the Grade II listed Old Joint Stock, provides the perfect atmosphere for cabaret, comedy and music alike. For the Birmingham Cabaret Festival the studio theatre will host acts such as the award-winning musical mischief makers, EastEnd Cabaret, who will be headlining the festival.
Other highlights will include a performance by the Gentleman Juggler, Mat Ricardo, on Saturday 16th May, and Mr.B The Gentleman Rhymer, with his quest to reconnect Hip-Hop with manners and the Queen’s English, on Friday 22nd May.
On Friday 15th May there will be Boris and Sergey’s Vaudevillian Adventure which promises a combination of tabletop puppetry and character comedy.
Other shows during the festival will include The Footsie Club, Lili La Scala, Tina Turner: Tea Lady, and physical comedy, puppetry, mime and illusion in The Weatherman.
