Quirky characters pop up in Wray for the Scarecrow Festival

Wray Scarecrow Festival 2014 - Despicable Me

Despicable Me was a popular choice at last year’s scarecrow festival.

When: 25th April – 4th May 2015

Where: Wray, Lancashire

£: Free to see the scarecrows around the village. Admission to the Fair Day attractions costs £3 for adults, £1.50 for the over 60s and free for under 16s.  There is a small charge of £1.50 for parking.

What is it?

Wray Scarecrow Festival will take place from Saturday 25th April until Monday 4th May.  Throughout the festival, the village of Wray in Lancashire will be filled with a whole plethora of fun and quirky scarecrows.

This year’s attractions will include a 10k road race, a car boot sale, a giant scarecrow parade, a vintage market, a classic car show, and a fun fair.

There are numerous events taking place during the scarecrow festival.  On Saturday 25th April there is a 10k road race and on Sunday 26th April there will be a car boot sale from 8am until 2pm.  On evening of Friday 1st May, the Giant Scarecrow Parade takes place.  The parade will head along Main Street and end at the Bridge House Barn Tea Rooms, and will feature Giant Scarecrows, the Mayor of Lancaster, drummers and a 60ft Chinese Dragon.

Wray Scarecrow Festival 2014 - Sacked Scarecrow

‘Sacked Scarecrow’ inspired by David Moyes at last year’s Wray Scarecrow Festival.

The Vintage Market has become a popular event over the last few years and this year it will take place on Sunday 3rd May from 11am on the school field.  Also on the Sunday there will be an informal rally of classic cars.  There will be no admission charge for the Vintage Market and Classic Car Rally.

During Fair Day, on Bank Holiday Monday (4th May), there will be a whole host of activities taking place on the school field.  The events taking place on Fair Day will include QES Kirby Lonsdale Samba Band and Barrow St Andrews Pipe Band in the morning.  Then in the afternoon there will be a flying display by Cuerden Birds of Prey, duck herding with Thomas Longton Esq of Quernmore, the Croix Du Nord-Battle Display, a junior football match and Firefighters in Action by Hornby retained firefighters.

Other entertainment on the school field during Fair Day will include a children’s entertainer, a display of animals from the Rare Breeds Trust, chainsaw carving displays, craft stalls and refreshments in the tea tent.  The Wray and Caton Moor Fell Race will also take place on Fair Day, at 11.30am.
