What is it?
This year’s World Water Bombing Championships take place at Ponds Forge in Sheffield on Wednesday 6th May 2015. This will be the eleventh annual event.
For eleven years now, water bombers from across the region have launched themselves from the 3m diving platform in a fancy dress costume of their choice. The water bombers are graded on their style, splash and presentation by a judging panel which includes two Macmillan nurses and an unusual mystery guest.
The fancy dress costumes are a major part of the event. Over the years there have been some interesting ideas, including a team of Umpa Lumpas, YMCA, The Wizard of Oz, the cast of Grease and even a team who chose to call themselves the Flying Mankinis! Last year’s eclectic costumes included a team of Spartans complete with chariot, the Dudes of Hazard, some elves, crash test dummies and rock stars.
Of course, if you don’t fancy getting wet or feel brave enough to dress up in a crazy costume, you can still head along to the event and lend your support. Spectators who don’t fancy flinging themselves off the diving platforms can watch the fun for a suggested donation of £2 to Macmillan. A PUKKA pie and peas will also be available at the discount price of £2.50 for hungry bombers and their supporters.
