What is it?
Celebrate the asparagus season with the British Asparagus Festival running from 23rd April to 21st June in the Vale of Evesham.
This is the 8th year that there has been such a celebration, and the main dates in the festival calendar begin on Wednesday 23rd April when the Great English Asparagus Run takes place. The festivities begin at 8am at The Fleece Inn, Bretforton. Look out for St George, Gus the asparagus man, the Asparafairy and the Asparamancer as well as the classic and vintage cars setting off for their ‘aspararun’ to Leicester.
On Wednesday 13th and Wednesday 20th May there will be Asparabus Coach Tours taking place. These unique tours will take people around the Vale of Evesham to experience the asparagus capital for themselves. The tour begins with morning coffee at the historic Fleece Inn, which is home to the asparagus auctions and festival. The trip also includes a visit to the Almonry Museum in Evesham, a tour of the Vale and a visit to Revills farm at Defford.
On Sunday 24th May is the Bretforton Silver Band Asparagus Auction and on Monday 25th May the Asparagus Festival Family Fun Day happens. Both take place at The Fleece Inn in Bretforton.
AsparaFest, the main highlight in the festival season, will take place from Saturday 30th May to Sunday 31st June at Ashdown Farm, near Badsey. Over the weekend visitors can expect live music, stalls, talks, workshops and demonstrations, as well as a fun fair, duck herding, vintage vehicles, and real ale and cider.
The live music will include The Wurzels, The Moulettes, Blackbeard’s Tea Party, Thrill Collins, Flutatious, Hillbilly Troupe, Shout Choir, Worcester Ukulele Club, Pistol Pete & Model Folk. There will be family-friendly entertainment and activities with Junkfish, the Quack Pack, Easy Peasy Cookery School, Animal Magic, Falconry Days and Worcester Barn Owls.
The AsparaWriting Festival takes place from 6th to 13th June, featuring workshops, talks and private dinners with authors. Finally, to round off the British Asparagus Festival, the Evesham National Morris Weekend will take place from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st June.
