What is it?

Being the butler of a Victorian country house is no easy job. During February visitors to English Heritage’s Belsay Hall can learn just what it takes when they enrol in the Victorian Butler School.

Do you think you’ve got what it takes?  Then make sure your shoes are polished, your clothes are immaculate and you’re standing up straight to join the Butler School this half term.  You can learn all about the etiquette of a country house, from dressing a table to folding a napkin.  However, make sure you pay attention, as the master of the house won’t keep sloppy butlers around for long!

Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens are the creation of the Middleton family, over more than seven centuries.  Belsay Hall is an austerely Classical Greek Revival villa, now displayed without furnishings to reveal the fine craftsmanship of its construction.
