What is it?

Head to English Heritage’s Belsay Hall in Northumberland this half term for Victorian Illusion Week.

The Victorian era was one of invention and entertainment, exploring illusion, music hall, and slight of hand.  Join the team at Belsay Hall this half term as they expose the trickery behind the Victorian magicians with hands on activities that will entertain little ones for hours.

Visitors might not be able to believe their eyes after taking part in magical and optical illusions such as the afterimage, the barber pole, Magic Eye, Benham’s top, the Delboeuf illusion, peripheral drift, the Ehrenstein illusion, the thaumatrobe, the figure-ground perception, trompe l’oeil, the Fraser spiral, and grid and hybrid illusions.

Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens are the creation of the Middleton family, over more than seven centuries. Belsay Hall is an austerely Classical Greek Revival villa, now displayed without furnishings to reveal the fine craftsmanship of its construction.
